Using HTML in Category Descriptions

For WordPress Users...
When you create Categories, you are given the option to put in a description. If you havent been doing this, then you should - because the text that you type in shows up on your Category pages. This helps with "on the page optimization" as well as Adsense relevancy (if you are using Adsense on your blog). Not to mention it's a great way to head up your listings!

Anyway, I was playing around with my Category Descriptions earlier today, and found out that you can use HTML Code there! I figured it was worth testing.

Pretty cool, huh? Here's an example:

One thing to note, though - using "target=_blank" to make hyperlinks open in a new window (for some reason) made other links on certain pages open in new windows. I didnt like sidebar links opening new browser windows, so I removed that code...

Oh... and since that Description is also the Alt Text for your Category links in the sidebar, you'll have HTML Code showing in those mouseovers. Just FYI.

  1. You're welcome! I thought of a lot of cool things you could do with the categories once I figured out that you could add code!

This will allow you to add a different banner to each category page (relevant to that category) - in addition to 'dressing up' your text there!

But even without HTML, the use of category descriptions holds a lot of value obviously. This is something I learned from Teli in OptiNiche that I wouldnt have thought of myself πŸ˜‰

  2. Thanks for the tip Lynn.

I've probably skipped putting in a description on 98% of my categories πŸ™

And if you add a new category as you are posting a new post you won't even be given the option to give it a description or arrange it as a sub-category. You have to remember to go in and do this afterwards in the category maintenance section.

Another reason for thinking over your category strategy before post your first entry on your new blog.

  3. Hi Stephen,

Thank you so much for the compliments, and I'm glad you found the tip useful! I *just* set up my Technorati profile this morning, so it's nice to see it's working already!

You have a very nice theme going on your own blog - I love the colors and layout!

  4. Just popped by via Technorati and spotted this post and as I am just getting into WordPress I appreciate the notes will update my categories after this post.

Also loved the simplicity of the site and how the Adsense slots in without being obtrusive, I am still working on that.

    Regards
    Stephen

Thanks for this Tip Lynn! I must to admit to being lazy where Descriptions are concerned, and at the back of my mind realised they were important for SEO and Adsense but was too lazy to do something about it - now I will! πŸ™‚
